Instead of keeping his mouth shut, he’s got a huge grin on his face. And EV certainly has every reason to. The Suffolk-based rapper quit his job as a truck mechanic just before Christmas in 2023 to focus on music full-time. Although he’d only just secured a record deal, it was still a big risk. With tracks of the calibre of “Sirens” and “Cuppa Tea” (2023), the newcomer is already setting venues and playlists alike alight across the UK, proving that the gamble is paying off. The sound pumps its way through the rave scene of the 90s but combines physical beats with hefty rap bars and alternative mixing techniques. As a result, the EPs “DJs, Dealers And Ravers” (2024) and “Sunset Behind The Tower Blocks” (2025) sound like a Friday night in the city, where anything can happen. The vibe is carefree, but the sound isn’t bland or flat; instead, it’s lovingly crafted with rough edges. The fact that EV not only has the backing of the team at BBC Introducing but also sees his “dancey lad rap” met with rapturous applause at some of Europe’s most prestigious festivals speaks for itself. And he’ll finally be making an appearance here in Hamburg this September with his new single, “Super High”, and more fresh material.
