________

Milkweed:

Milkweed describe their sound as slacker-trad, which is both true and somehow insufficient. For three years Milkweed have refined a formula – taking existing source material (a folklore journal, a book on Welsh myths, another on bronze age human remains and most recently Thomas Kinsella’s masterfully stark translation of the Táin Bó Cúailnge), cutting up the words and feeding them through a woodchipper of lo-fi production and experimental folk music.

On the face of it their musical concerns are transatlantic – they follow the rich creative line that runs between British traditional music and the songs and tunes of the eastern United States. In reality their scope is global, and rooted in deep time, with influences from prehistory bleeding into a troubled and troubling modern era. As a result their music doesn’t sit easily anywhere, but ricochets between bewitching folk music and disconcerting hauntological experimentation.

Sofie Birch:

Sofie Birch is a sound artist working with live ambient electro-acoustic music, using textures, frequencies, field recordings, synthesis, voice, and trance-based instruments to shape immersive sonic environments. Her practice approaches sound as both material and medium—capable of subtly shifting perception, attention, and states of presence.

Ambient Abracadabra is her evolving sound practice, unfolding between radio, live performance, and immersive environments. It treats listening as a space in itself—where sound, atmosphere, and attention gently reshape experience. Each month, she hosts Ambient Abracadabra on NTS, a collage of listeners’ adventurous sound works interwoven with excerpts from conversations on natural medicine, spiritual inquiry, and the unknown.

At the core of her work is an ongoing exploration of perception, interconnectedness, and the intelligence of nature. Working across sound, space, and form, she creates environments for deep listening—ranging from intimate acoustic settings to multichannel compositions, often incorporating visual and spatial elements such as costume and stage design.

Her work invites a heightened sensitivity to sound as a vibrational and relational force—opening spaces for presence, subtle transformation, and attunement to the living world.
