Not long after serving four years in the U.S. Marines (including two tours of duty in the Middle East as part of Operation Desert Storm), he inked his first record deal and quickly scored a global crossover smash with “Oh Carolina.”

As the only diamond-selling dancehall artist in music history, Shaggy, managed by the Cherrytree Music Company, has sold more than 40 million album units to date, in addition to landing eight singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and seven albums on the Billboard 200 (including four in the top 40). He is among the top 3 streamed reggae artists of all time on Spotify (along with Bob Marley & Sean Paul).

  • Vybz Kartel
    Vybz Kartel

Vybz Kartel (real name Adidja Palmer) is a famous Jamaican dancehall deejay. The young Adidja was exposed to a wide variety of music from a tender age by two uncles who happened to be aspiring musicians themselves. Every weekend he would be treated to new musical offerings on his uncle's old component set, ranging from Sam Cooke to country and western ballads to Ninja Man, who became one of his musical heroes. At the age of 10 his favorites included artists as diverse as Ninja Man, Papa San, Charlie Chaplin, Will Smith and KRS-1, all of whose lyrics he would write down and study word-for-word, performing them later for the entertainment of friends. Deciding he wanted to be a deejay, he began writing his own lyrics at the age of 11.

Eager to show off his skills, Adidja and his friends often frequented the weekly Gong Talent Show at the now defunct Coney Amusement Park on the outskirts of Kingston, but to their chagrin were always gonged off whenever they got a chance to perform. Undeterred by his weekly failure to impress the talent show audience, Adidja decided to hone his skills and concentrate on winning over his own community of Waterford until he was ready for bigger things. With that goal in mind, on weekends he would practise his art on neighborhood sound systems Soul Signal and Electric Force. In 1993, the young Adidja, now in his early teens, recorded his first single Love Fat Woman for Alvin Reid's One Heart Label under the name Adi Banton, a name he chose in tribute to Buju Banton, another of his role models. He recorded several more tracks for local producers, perfecting his craft until 1996, when he and two friends, Mr Lee and a singer called Escobar, decided to form a group. One night, after watching a movie about Pablo Escobar and his infamous cartel, Adidja came up with a name for his trio: Vibes Cartel.

Vybz Kartel's new role as Killer's protege caught the attention of the public and led to a meteoric career rise, first as a ghost-writer for Bounty, Elephant Man and other members of the Scare Dem Crew, followed by collaborations with Bounty Killer such as Gal Clown and Girls Like Mine (Liquid Riddim), then finally coming into his own with early hits such as Gun Clown, Guns Like Mine (Trafalga Riddim), Badman (Panty Raid Riddim), Bus Mi Gun Like Nuttn, Most High (Mexican Riddim) and War Organizer (Clappas Riddim). He also had a string of successful collaborations with Wayne Marshall, such as New Millennium (Mad Antz Riddim), Why (Krazy Riddim) and Why Again (Good To Go Riddim). This unprecedented and impressive debut led to Vybz Kartel being crowned Deejay Of The Year at Stone Love's 30th Anniversary, 2002, a feat unmatched by any new artist in dancehall's history.

Vybz Kartel's future as a superstar and potential crossover success seems assured. Kartel not only has incredible rhymes and subtle yet clever pop culture references, he has a unique lyrical flow all his own. It is to be noted that Kartel rarley does dance "chunes" along the lines of Elephant man or Beenie Man. Nevertheless,he has already had several high-profile collaborations with international hip-hop and pop stars and is being touted as the next big thing in dancehall. In terms of singles sold, he has had the second-best year on the reggae charts for 2003 (outsold only by Elephant Man) and has released two albums this year for UK label Greensleeves. He was also featured twice on the Def Jamaica project, and nominated for Source, VIBE and UK MOBO awards (although his MOBO nominations, along with those of Beenie Man, Elephant Man and Sizzla were withdrawn over concerns of homophobia, a common issue with dancehall reggae in general). His video for New Millennium/Why with Wayne Marshall, though decidedly low-budget, has already been played on MTV, and his underground following is so large that a bootleg version of, in his own words "a very, very low budget film" that was made in 2001 has begun circulating. He has two albums, several mixtapes and a very prolific library of singles.

Following differences with his record label, Greensleeves, Vybz Kartel changed his name to Addi Di Teacha near the end of 2006. All new material that he produces will be released under this name. Greensleeves will continue to release his older but no-yet-released material under the name Vybz Kartel.

In 2005 Vybz and Bountkiller had a falling out after Vybz preform a song with Di Angel Bounty former girl. The is 'Yuh Know Yuh Baby father'so he walk out of the Alliance leading to Aidonia later leaving because he took Vybz side and fall out with Busy Signal and made the song 'Adid A Mi Daddy Who Wa Vex WAN Vex'.It was said that Vybz took side with Beenie by showing up at his wedding but he said that Beenie was his Artist and would not and thats as far as it goes. After that he and Movado which leaded to a number of throwing of words through song of course like 'Movado di failla,Them start war and dead,Them a pu@#* pon di battle'.But this mis happas only made Mr.Palmer express him self more on his war side.

The famous Vybz Kartel is now the proud owner of Portmore Emper found in 2007 on which he have some new Artist deejaying on his own label. To clear up why this was done he had an interview with Antony Miller coat"If I had join Moffia House I would be taking side which I said I would not do so when ever you see Vybz Kartel say Portmore Empire" on coat. He also own a new rum call 'VYBZRUM',his people must be so proud. Recently he did a number of calabarations with a number of artist including D.I aka Daniel and Di Angel Beenie man former wife but thats another story.

I hope he contain to do excellent and make even madder music to hurt up some of the haters head. For the love that he have for Dancehall music noone can ever take away.

  • Benny Page
    Benny Page

Music has always been a big part of Benny's life, but it really started making an impact on him when he discovered hip-hop at the age of 11; artists such as DJ Premier, Mobb Deep, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog and Nas influenced Benny in a big way. Benny's growing passion for music lead him to his school band in which he played the drums and learned the guitar. He discovered Jungle at the age of 14 and being in his band did not seem enough for him musically, jungle music triggered an awakening in him and a growing thirst to make his own music. Tunes such as The House crew's Super Hero, A-Zone's Calling All the People and Worries in the Dance on London Someting Records were seminal tunes. Before long Benny was learning to use a sequencer on his dad's PC. At the age of 16 Benny began a 2 year music technology course, for him, making music become an addiction, phoning in sick all the time to his part time job so he could live and breath beats. Realizing that this was far more than a hobby, Benny soon realized the only way to put his all into this and progress was if he invested in some quality equipment, so, Benny began working full time. His first break came from the South London based label, Cutterz Choice bringing his first tune, Chainsaws, to wax. This was followed by the succes of Addictive which was rinsed by the likes of Nicky Blackmarket, Brockie and Ash Attack. Shortly after came Sneaker Pimp, it was Benny's first tune to get airplay on major radio station, initially being played by the legendary John Peel on BBC Radio 1. Neckbreaker/Kist, shortly commenced being the first tune on the Graffs series, Neckbreaker made it onto the Aphrodite mix CD released in America. Following this success Benny was asked to remix the Aphrodite classic, Stalker. To follow were tunes such as Pinball, Tempest and Moneyzone with towering success on the dance floor which lead us to the present. Benny has a very diverse range of styles and hopes to bring more vibes back to drum n bass, vocals play a big part in his current productions and the plans to work more with vocals in the future. taken from http://www.digitalsoundboy.com
