On Thursday July 9, Melbourne ska-punk institution The Resignators will take over The Espy Basement for a night dedicated almost entirely to songs they usually forget exist.
In a bold and commercially questionable move, the band has announced they will not be playing “the hits”. Instead, audiences can expect a lovingly assembled collection of rarely performed tracks from the Party Dates and Rabbithole albums, alongside a handful of songs that have been sitting quietly in the musical garage gathering dust for years.
Fans hoping to hear the usual crowd favourites may experience confusion, personal growth or both.
“This is for the deep cuts enthusiasts,” said nobody in particular. “The people who yell out songs we haven’t rehearsed.”
Known for their explosive blend of ska, punk and brass-fuelled chaos, The Resignators are treating this show as a chance to revisit the weird corners of their catalogue. Expect odd choices, possible mistakes and the sort of setlist that makes long-time fans turn to each other and say, “I completely forgot this song existed.”
Support comes from Footscray’s top traditional Celtic-doom-metal banjo-band in the entire central Footscray area, Banjzig, a title fiercely contested and legally unverified.
The Espy Basement provides the perfect setting for the evening: loud, sweaty and close enough to the bar that everyone involved can make questionable decisions efficiently.
