Ásgeir in Mengi

As one of Iceland’s most successful exports, singer-songwriter Ásgeir has always pushed the boundaries of his thoughtful brand of folk-pop. His debut album, ‘Dýrð í dauðaþögn’, became the best-selling debut in Icelandic history, leading to the English-language version ‘In The Silence’ in 2014.

He continued to refine his sound with ‘Afterglow’ in 2017, ‘Bury The Moon’ in 2020, and ‘Time On My Hands’ in 2022’, earning praise from press and radio worldwide, including the likes of The Independent, MOJO, NME, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash Magazine, BBC 6 Music and Radio X. In recent years, Ásgeir has embraced solo performances, playing nearly 70 intimate shows across Europe, the Nordics, and Iceland, including a UK tour with Icelandic singer GDRN.

He also performed with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and recorded a live session for Arte TV in Berlin.

His passion for live music has taken him to unique venues, including small churches, deepening his connection with audiences.

He wrote a song for a Kafkaesque play that was hosted at The Reykjavik City Theatre called Sýslumaður Dauðans.

Ásgeir is now back with his next album, focusing on songwriting with a fresh approach; prioritizing melody and personal storytelling, exploring themes of relationships, aging, hope, and nostalgia.

His influences range from Leonard Cohen and Daniel Lanois to contemporary artists like Adrianne Lenker and Dina Ögon.

Of Monsters and Men

Arny Margret has spent the last year making waves, not only in her Icelandic hometown but across Europe and the US, touring extensively, supporting Leif Vollebekk, Passenger, Blake Mills and more, as well as playing the likes of Newport Folk Festival, Reykjavik Calling and Iceland Airwaves. She’s now released her gorgeous sophomore album, ‘I Miss You, I Do’ on One Little Independent Records.

Musically she draws inspiration from folk and blues roots, utilizing a less-is-more approach to convey openness, choosing to rely mostly on the delicate strumming of acoustics and her dulcet voice. She cites influences from the likes of Andy Shauf, Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver, and Gregory Alan Isakov. Born and raised in a small town called Ísafjörður, she attended music school from the age of 6 learning to play the piano and gradually taught herself guitar. She recorded the album at studio Hljóðriti in Hafnarfjörður and will continue to make her mark globally with her intimate and affecting live performances.

St. Paul & The Broken Bones

Trombone Shorty has released Lifted, his first album of original music in five years. Recorded at his own Buckjump Studio with producer Chris Seefried (Fitz and the Tantrums, Andra Day), Shorty and his bandmates crash through funk, soul and psychedelic rock with transcendent performances, set to bold songwriting that explores grit and determination in hard times. The album features special guests Gary Clark Jr and Lauren Daigle as well as the New Breed Brass Band and has been widely celebrated by American Songwriter, OffBeat, No Depression and Bluegrass Situation, who state simply: “It’s true, it just doesn’t get cooler than Trombone Shorty.”

Focus track “Lie To Me” is a brass-heavy strut that showcases Shorty’s renowned soloing abilities on the trombone. The song comes charging out of the gate with powerful rhythmic chanting before the band kicks into gear with triumphant horn blasts and a marching band snare. Lyrically, the tune is about the end of a toxic relationship, with Shorty pleading : “If you don’t want this lie to me, you don’t even gotta waste your energy.”

Trombone Shorty has already had a busy 2022, winning his first Grammy for his work as both songwriter and featured artist on childhood friend and Album of the Year winner’s Jon Batiste’s We Are. He also performed at the Grammy Salute to Paul Simon alongside Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews, Jonas Brothers and Little Big Town, and is hosting his Treme Threauxdown event for a sixth time on April 30 at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans. Special guests include Joan Jett, Gary Clark Jr, Tank and the Bangas, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, David Shaw, James Andrews and more.

Following his April 30 show, he will close the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on May 8 with the hallowed final set that for years was performed by The Neville Brothers and Professor Longhair before that. After Jazz Fest, Shorty will bring his once-in-a-lifetime Voodoo Threaxdown tour featuring Tank and the Bangas, Big Freedia, Cyril Neville the Uptown Ruler and The Soul Rebels across the US. The tour will also feature a tribute to the foundational work of funk pioneers The Meters led by founding bassist George Porter Jr. alongside Dumpstaphunk. The Voodoo Threauxdown tour is a lesson in New Orleans music history, and a vision of where that music is headed in the 21st century. The festival will kick off on June 10 and will move across the US, making stops at NYC’s Central Park Summerstage on June 13, Red Rocks Amphitheater on June 28, and The Hollywood Bowl on August 10.

Trombone Shorty (born Troy Andrews) is a native of New Orleans’ Tremé neighborhood and got his start earlier than most, performing at Jazz Fest with Bo Diddley at age four and leading his own brass band at six. Since 2010, he’s released four chart-topping studio albums; collaborated across genres with Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Foo Fighters, ZHU, Zac Brown, Normani, Ringo Star, and countless others; played Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, Newport Jazz, and nearly every other major festival; appeared on dozens of tv shows, and at the star-studded Sesame Street Gala, where he was honored with his own muppet. The New York Times has called him an “unstoppable force,” he recently made a cameo on The Simpsons, was profiled by Vanity Fair in 2021 and has been featured in campaigns for Crown Royal and Folgers.

The good doctor William Carlos Williams famously wrote that “the pure products of America go crazy;” and it should surprise me not at all that the thought would find me a trembling but easy target alone in a hotel room, late of an evening, in the city of Hiroshima, by the Inland Sea.

This town has a way of stopping time and then re-animating it like still images in a flipbook, its stick figure dancing halting circles upon an endless sky. It invites you into a frozen past that flashes forward like a lost silent movie of our future already in progress.

Of course, the demands of travel have a beautiful way of skewing all perception, rendering it liquid and wholly unreliable–but in the way that keeps hard facts from obscuring the elusive truth: night becomes day; seasons arrive disguised as others; the living and the dead take up together in your mind like lonesome wallflowers at a Sunday Social; I phone my wife and she answers me with breaking news from the closed book of yesterday; I relearn to speak my own name...

Songs have the same power to confuse, seduce, stop time and re-animate it; to skin the lion and to leave it both spread on the floor and still stalking you from a ghostly crouch, the blood of your dreams already on its jowls. Because songs are in motion–and only fully realized in mid air and real-time— they are as untouchable as they are insistent.

It is here in room 922 of The Mitsui Garden Hotel that I have my first encounter with The Ash & Clay by The Milk Carton Kids. And whereas for as long as I have known them I have always perceived the twin voices of Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale as disappearing into one, I now hear that single and distinct character rising to speak for many...

For within these songs is a man himself in motion –a traveler who dances in silent, halting circles. And what he does is quietly bear witness like a weathervane, to the carnival of souls by the wayside, his eyes cornered but his face always pointing forward, his voice in our heads. He moves through love but is alone; laughs at the wreckage, weeps with lust; throws and sweeps confetti, stands at cold gravesides; raises a hand in promise, then picks your pocket and slips quietly back across the border. He slides outside the law, bound by honor and duty, the pure product of a mad country working with all its heart at fevered cross-purposes.

In the end it is mercy he is after, the character in this play—the kind of mercy that attends grace when truly living in spite of the inevitable, when singing the unspeakable to the unlistening. And from Hiroshima to Graceland, this character knows that the whole of human foolishness must be witnessed, loved, and forgiven for that mercy to be ratified.

Like Jesus and Harpo Marx, he does this for us all.

Singles like "Tennessee", is an open letter to God, which, not unlike Billie Holidays "Strange Fruit," gives new meaning to the term "Family tree." The song won an MTV music award for best rap single 1992. "People Everyday" another of their hits is a super funky treatment of the immortal Sly Stone anthem "Everyday People", also won them an MTV video award for best music video 1992. "Mr. Wendal" humanizes the "bums" on our streets. AD donated half of all the royalties to the National Coalition for the Homeless. AD has sold over 5 million albums to date. They've won 2 Grammy awards for best new artist and best rap single 1993. They were the first African - American artists to donate money to Nelson Mandela and the ANC in South Africa. AD has collaborated with director Spike Lee, on the Universal motion picture "X", Boomerang, among other movies. AD tours Australia, Asia, Europe, Canada, Africa and of course the U.S. to standing room-only crowds. They've shared stages with legends worldwide. Buffalo Traffic Jam is a folk band born in the heart of Bozeman, Montana, where its members, Frankie Cassidy and Nathan Ross, first crossed paths as students at Montana State University. United by a love for storytelling and the raw beauty of acoustic sound, they began crafting music that evokes wide-open landscapes and the emotions that live quietly beneath the surface of everyday life.
