“You have to live it to write it,” says guitarist Dean Deleo. “And this record is a reflection of where we’ve been recently.”
Bassist Robert DeLeo says Perdida (Spanish for ‘loss’) shows how music has helped them process grief, search for meaning and, ultimately, create something beautiful from the pain. “When I’ve gone through things in my life, I’ve found that sitting down and having an honest conversation with my guitar is the best therapy.”
“Recording an acoustic album like Perdida is something the band has wanted to do for many years,” says drummer Eric Kretz. “We performed on ‘MTV Unplugged’ in 1993, and we usually play acoustic mini-sets on tour, so when Robert and Dean started playing their new songs for us during our tour last year, we knew right away they would be perfect for an acoustic album.”
Writing lyrics for an introspective album like Perdida meant exposing himself like never before, says singer Jeff Gutt, who joined the band in 2017. “It’s an emotionally honest album and I needed to approach it that way for these songs to resonate. I had to let myself be as vulnerable writing the lyrics as Dean and Robert were writing the music.”
To record Perdida, the quartet assembled at Kretz’s Bomb Shelter Studios in February. The key to making the album, Dean explains, was finding a way to say more with less. “Everything you hear serves a purpose, from the space in the arrangements to the different instruments. We only added things that served the songs.”
As a result, there are instruments on Perdida that you don’t normally hear on an STP record, like flute (“I Didn’t Know The Time,”) alto saxophone (“Years,”) guitarrón (“Miles Away,”) and enough vintage keyboards to make Rick Wakeman jealous. “We’ve done similar things before – like the trumpet solo on ‘Adhesive’ from Tiny Music – but never on such a large scale,” Robert says. “Working with other musicians on this album was such a joy because it gave us a rare opportunity to hear our songs through someone else’s ears.”
That approach shines on the title track, where a nylon-string guitar takes the lead as keyboard, violin, viola and cello ebb and flow behind Gutt’s soaring vocal on the chorus: “Oh perdida come and go/Stay with me tonight/But in the morning please be gone.”
“She’s My Queen” is another highpoint on the band’s sonic adventure. Built around an Indian drone and carried along by a gently pulsing beat, the song casts a hypnotic spell that’s punctuated by background singers, flute and Marxophone – a special kind of hammered dulcimer from the 1920s.
The songs that open and close Perdida – “Fare Thee Well” and “Sunburst” respectively – are fitting bookends, Gutt says. “They really capture the emotional journey that takes place on this album. It starts with saying goodbye on ‘Fare Thee Well’ and ends with a new beginning on ‘Sunburst.’ It’s a melancholy record, but it ends on a hopeful note.”
As it happens, those two tracks also spotlight facets of the DeLeo brothers’ distinctive songwriting voices. “Fare Thee Well” by Robert pulls you in from the first strum of the guitar and has you singing along after one listen. In Dean’s “Sunburst,” the melody unfolds gradually, rising and falling multiple times before building to a cathartic guitar-fueled crescendo.
In addition to the album, Stone Temple Pilots will also launch an acoustic tour in early 2020.
“Some songs are obvious candidates for an acoustic performance,” Dean says. “What will be really interesting are the unexpected choices, where we reimagine a familiar song and present in a totally different light.”
Kretz says the band is looking forward to not only performing the new songs, but also pulling songs from previous albums into the setlist. “We’ll finally get a chance to play songs from our catalog that we’ve never played live, or in some cases, haven’t played live in more than 20 years.”
“We’ve talked about doing this kind of tour for years, and now it’s finally happening,” Robert explains. “We’re excited because it’s not only a chance for us to celebrate our new album in a special way, but also everything that’s brought us to this moment.”

Ortiz is a big fan of megastar violinist Lindsey Stirling, so the band were elated when she accepted their invitation to contribute to one of their songs. “She is an angel – she has so much light in her. But the primary reason I wanted to work with her… strictly speaking musically, she is gnarly - her music is epic,” adds Ortiz. Travis Barker, best known as the drummer for blink-182, makes a handful of appearances as well. Songs like “Lightning Strike,” “Not My Problem,” “Hand Grenade,” and “Invincible” are destined to take their place alongside classic ETF anthems like “One for the Money” and “The Flood.”

ESCAPE THE FATE conquered the burgeoning metalcore scene on the strength of their breakout album, This War is Ours (2008), which led to a major label deal and the rock crossover success of Escape the Fate (2011), produced by hitmaker Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Korn, Avril Lavigne). The album hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Albums, the first of three ESCAPE THE FATE records to debut at No. 1 or two on that chart. “I started doing this because music was my ‘escape’,” says Mabbitt. “I was running from unresolved feelings or chasing things away with a bottle. But music was always there for me. It’s been such an escape for so many people that it puts me in my place. I become so humbled. A.F.I.AFI are leaders, not followers. A collective in a perpetual state of creative evolution as fluid as the evocative figures contorting on the cover of Bodies, their newest collection of songs. The record is a snapshot of unrelenting artists in motion, unconcerned with compromise or outside demands.
The band initially summoned a steady subcultural groundswell in the mid-90s, devoid of careerist ambitions. The band first made music as teenaged misfits in an obscure Northern California town, steadily assembling a dense catalog over the years marked by its diversity and authenticity.
The platinum success of Sing the Sorrow blazed a path for a generation of hardcore-punk weaned bands to similarly crossover. 2006's Decemberunderground upended expectations again and earned AFI a second platinum plaque. Crash Love was another adventurous turn, with expansive and almost optimistic-sounding melodies, glistening with emotion. The haunting Burials arrived four years later, debuting in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. Drowning PoolDrowning Pool is a hard rock/nu metal band from Dallas, Texas that rose to prominence while playing along with Ozzy Osbourne during Ozzfest. Their 2001 debut album, Sinner, was certified platinum within six months and the video for its first single "Bodies" was frequently aired on various music video channels. After the September 11th attacks the song "Bodies" was infrequently heard on many radio stations due to the sensitivity of those families' loved ones who jumped from the towers. In August 2002 the lead singer of the band, Dave Williams, died in his tour bus of heart failure.
After Williams' death, the band decided to carry on and began searching for a new singer. Kelly Schaefer of Neurotica tried out but failed. Ben Schiegel of Sw1tched said he was turned down, but the band denied that report. The band asked Machine Head vocalist Robert Flynn if he wanted to join, but he politely declined, not being a fan of Drowning Pool to begin with. Rob Zombie contributed vocals to their song "The Man Without Fear", from the Daredevil soundtrack, but he was never in line to be their new vocalist.
In 2003, the band found a new singer in Jason 'Gong' Jones who took place of Dave Williams in the wake of his untimely death. They released the album Desensitized in 2004.
Jason's departure from Drowning Pool was publically announced on June 14, 2005, due to irreconcilable differences. Jones would later join the christian rock band A.M. Conspiracy. Almost immediately, rumours started swirling concerning the new singer's identity, most of them pointing to former SOiL singer Ryan McCombs. Drowning Pool announced that the singer would be formally announced August 25 at the Ozzfest date in Dallas, Texas, where Drowning Pool will do a one off performance on the main stage. On July 20th, website SMNNews received word from close sources that McCombs was indeed the new singer, and that fact was confirmed by McCombs and Drowning Pool alike the next week.
In spring of 2006, Drowning Pool announced that they had parted ways with Wind-Up Records. As of June 30th, Wind-Up's website has been updated to confirm this.
In October 2006, a new song called No More was announced to be released on the Saw III soundtrack, their first track (besides the second version of Rise Up) with Ryan McCombs on vocals.
On February 26, 2007, it was announced that the band has signed a new deal with Eleven Seven Music, after receiving offers from Century Media and Sanctuary Records.[1] It was also confirmed that Drowning Pool will have a new management company, Tenth Street Entertainment, following the group's departure with Paul Bassman of Bass Management.
The band's newest album is, "Full Circle" and was released on July 24th, 2007 nationwide. 2 songs on the album were being produced by Funny Farm Records, owned by Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx and former Beautiful Creatures guitarist DJ Ashba. The remaining tracks have been recorded with Producer Ben Schigel at the Dallas based January Studios.
In January 2008, the band announced that they would be heading out on a North American tour as special guests of Saliva.

New Found Glory
It’s been decades since New Found Glory's likeness was chiseled onto pop-punk’s Mount Rushmore, but as the quartet, formed in Coral Springs, Florida, in 1997, approach their landmark 30th anniversary, they still have a lot to say.
“We wanted to make something that really focused on how lucky we are,” guitarist Chad Gilbert explains of Listen Up!, NFG’s 11th studio album and first release for Pure Noise Records. “We’ve all gone through serious stuff in our lives, and I think the lyrics on this record are more meaningful and purposeful than ever. It’s a positive outlet that hopefully keeps people going.”
The album’s spirit is indeed a testament to resilience, shaped not only by Gilbert’s ongoing battle with an aggressive metastatic cancer but also the ever-evolving dynamic between him and his bandmates – vocalist Jordan Pundik, bassist Ian Grushka and drummer Cyrus Bolooki – as they continue to push each other creatively. It’s the same full-hearted sentiment that colored their 2023 acoustic EP, Make The Most Of It, here delivered in three-minute bursts of the band’s trademark pop-punk sound: the shiny melodies that launched them onto TRL in the early 2000s, the ghosts of the tight-knit punk and hardcore scenes they came up in as teenagers.
That kinetic energy informed Listen Up! from its earliest stages of the writing process, with Bolooki and Grushka traveling to Gilbert’s Nashville-area home to flesh out the songs the guitarist had been crafting. Sitting face to face with their instruments, the three fell into a rhythm of workshopping and arranging together, leaning into a riff-first mentality that harkened back to iconic songs like “My Friends Over You” and “All Downhill From Here” in what Bolooki calls a musical return to form.
“The album is nonstop riffs you can sing along to and air guitar with,” Gilbert says. “Back in the day, I’d write riffs and then we’d come up with melodies around them, but later the melodies came first and we’d have the music fit the melody. Now, the two are equally as important.”
“Being able to grab a guitar and jam these riffs with Ian and Chad with a second guitar in play, before I even picked up a drumstick, allowed for more creativity to come out in riffs and leads during the songwriting process,” Bolooki adds. “My musical background is a little more theory-based, and I think that helped bridge the gap between different musical ideas Chad had.”
True to their word, first single “100%” puts New Found Glory’s renewed approach on full display, an instant classic the group road-tested all summer on tour with The Offspring and Jimmy Eat World. Bursting with tightly wound guitar chugs and Pundik’s iconic timbre, the track is as much a love song as it is a renewed commitment from the band to its audience – now a multigenerational affair as era-defining tracks from gold and platinum albums like 2000’s New Found Glory, 2002’s Sticks And Stones and 2004’s Catalyst get the same fervent live response as the fan-favorite collection of covers like “Kiss Me” and “Let It Go.”
“The success of the Catalyst anniversary tour and seeing a whole new wave of young New Found Glory fans filled us with even more energy to make this record fresh and exciting,” Gilbert says. “It feels like there’s still room for us to bring in a new wave of fans to this genre.”
Elsewhere on the album, “Laugh It Off” trembles with the darkly hewn moodiness of Catalyst, “Treat Yourself” gallops with skate-punk fury and “Medicine,” which Pundik likens to Matthew Sweet’s brand of power-pop, provides a lighter musical moment. Make The Most Of It cut “Dream Born Again,” here in full-band form, sparkles with echoes of Sunny Day Real Estate, while the album-closing “Frankenstein’s Monster” reflects on Gilbert’s cancer journey over the last few years – a struggle that could have derailed the band but instead fueled the guitarist to carry his positivity and drive straight into the studio alongside producer Steve Evetts (Saves The Day, Lifetime) and NFG touring guitarist (and Four Year Strong frontman) Dan O’Connor, who joined the band in the studio for the first time.
“I was between cancer treatments making the record,” Gilbert explains. “I was pretty much dying again. I was going into the studio in the morning and sitting there with a 190, 200 blood pressure, going to the hospital, getting scans, going back to the studio, finishing a guitar track and then going home. I had some heart failure issues – all this fluid in my body and lungs – and we had to arrange the schedule so we could finish the album.”
“Despite everything Chad was going through, he would come in just ready to roll, and that set the tone for the record,” Pundik says, noting Gilbert pushed him to share more of the lyrics he’d been writing throughout the process. “Seeing him feeling positive and excited about the songs got us excited about it, and being in the studio every day together made the process really special. Recording is always a stressful thing because you’re trying to make the best album you can, but I think we all went in trying not to take it so seriously and just have fun with it.”
At this stage in their decorated career, New Found Glory’s goals are straightforward: keep inspiring the next generation of artists and continue writing songs that help their audience – and themselves – find strength, courage, and joy. The band has come a long way from their humble South Florida beginnings, as detailed on the Listen Up! standout “Beer And Blood Stains,” a nostalgic riff-factory detailing the band’s early battle scars at local clubs, where danger meant more than catching a stray elbow in the swirl of a circle pit. “Looking back, was it fun or crime?” Pundik muses on the track before elevating the album’s simple-yet-profound mission statement: “It’s good to be alive.”

Richard Patrick’s career is a vision of multifaceted creativity, which he has delivered throughout his 30+ years producing music professionally through his band Filter, various collaborations, side projects, super groups, scoring films and writing for soundtracks.
Patrick’s initial foray into the public eye was as Nine Inch Nails’ first touring guitarist. Patrick had met NIN’s founder Trent Reznor in the late ‘80s in a music store in Cleveland. The two became close friends and then bandmates. Patrick played with the band from 1989-1993, appearing in numerous music videos including “Down in It,” “Head Like a Hole, “Wish” and “Gave Up.”
Filter was formed in Cleveland, OH in 1993 when Patrick left Nine Inch Nails.
Filter’s debut album Short Bus was released in 1995 and went platinum, largely due to the success of their first single “Hey Man Nice Shot.” The follow up, 1999's Title of Record, also went platinum driven by the huge crossover success of the song “Take a Picture.”
Filter’s third album, The Amalgamut, was released in 2002, though sales stalled when Patrick checked into rehab after years of heavy alcohol and drug abuse just as touring and promotion began for the album. The album still spawned such classic songs as “Where Do We Go from Here” and “American Cliché.”
After rehab in 2006, the Army of Anyone project - a supergroup led by Patrick with Dean and Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots and Ray Luzier of Korn – came to light, releasing one album and a tour before each went back to their respective bands. Patrick refocused on Filter, releasing Anthems for the Damned in 2008, The Trouble with Angels in 2010, The Sun Comes Out Tonight in 2013 and Crazy Eyes in 2016, and two singles in 2020.
Now 20+ years sober, Patrick is more prolific than ever.
Celebrating 30 years of Filter, 2023 saw the much-anticipated release of a new Filter album The Algorithm. Singles “Face Down” and “Obliteration” both had innovative music videos which garnered attention from new and long-time fans alike.
Filter began an extensive worldwide campaign, including The Freaks on Parade tour featuring Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper and Ministry, which continues this year with shows in the UK, EU, Australia, Canada and back to the U.S. again.

BlessthefallThe band grew out of high school practice sessions between guitarist Mike and drummer Matt, filling out the roster with singer Craig and bassist Jared to form Blessthefall in 2004. They released a three-track EP in mid-2005 and added guitarist Eric to form their current lineup. Phoenix-area gigs with Greeley Estates and an openly religious orientation got the band local press and a deal with Warner subsidiary, Record Collection. The band then toured with Alesana and Norma Jean across the United States and Canada. Their debut album, His Last Walk, was released on April 10, 2007, to mixed reviews. The band completed the entire 2007 Warped Tour circuit nationwide.
Blessthefall toured with Escape The Fate, LoveHateHero, and Dance Gavin Dance on the Black On Black tour during September and October of 2007.
Blessthefall was a part of From First to Last's fall headlining tour, entitled "RATHER BE SLAYIN' N00BZ" which started November 1st with A Skylit Drive, and Vanna. Then after, they went on tour with Silverstein, the tour being their first ever UK and European Tour, with their first UK show at the Colchester Arts Centre on November 16th 2007.

From a city named after a mythical creature - known for its invincibility against competition and for its rise among ruin, Phoenix proves itself time and again to be a city on the rise- producing notable band after band. There can be no better representation than blessthefall. In addition to their staggering live performances, blessthefall have quickly become known for their uninhibited personalities and eccentricities, including a love for llamas, hot tamales, and the Top Gun soundtrack. They also carry certain advantages - as they are younger, yet equally as capable as their more established counterparts. A five-piece that dug its heels into the dry desert sands and refused to relent, blessthefall planted themselves amid the chaos of competition in January of 2004. Drummer Matt and guitarist Mike formed a band with sweeping dreams and untainted visions. Early on, with friends playing as interim members, the band gained regional recognition by winning local battle-of-the-bands contests, spurring them to continue forming the enterprise, despite the member changes that young bands typically face. Temporarily secure in their line-up (with Craig's vocals and Jared on bass) they spent the next year focused on evolving as musicians and refining their sound. Though they drew from bands like Underoath, Alexisonfire, and As I Lay Dying, aspects of pop, hip-hop, rap, and even R&B surfaced in their songs - if not through Craig's vocal reach, then through the beats and rhythms that surfaced in their music. Being one of the youngest bands in the area, blessthefall were added to bills with other notable local artists such as Greeley Estates and Scary Kids Scaring Kids. In August of 2005 they recorded their self-titled 3 song EP which enhancing their growing reputation. By October the line up was complete when Eric was added on guitar, complementing the band's progressing sound. As the older bands were away from Phoenix touring and recording, blessthefall took advantage of the musical drought the Valley was in. They confirmed their capabilities by selling out show after show at the local venues. Ultimately, they were responsible for shutting down Neckbeard's (a well-known local venue) in January 2006. Doors were permanently closed after the employees failed to maintain capacity due to the hundreds of kids outside trying to force their way into an already sold-out show where blessthefall was headlining. They continued to share the stage with other established artists, often drawing a bigger crowd then those more reputed. They were part of the 2007 Vans Warped Tour on the Smartpunk Stage. Their debut full length His Last Walk was released on Science Records on April 10th, 2007.

Wage WarIf you think that you've already heard it all when it comes to heavy music, you just haven't heard Wage War. The group which is composed of vocalist Briton Bond, guitarist/vocalist Cody Quistad, guitarist Seth Blake, bassist Chris Gaylord and drummer Stephen Kluesener formed in Ocala, Florida, in 2013 and instantly started playing all over the area, quickly getting signed to Fearless Records the old fashioned way: By sending a song to the label. From there the group linked up with the production team of Andrew Wade (Neck Deep, Motionless In White) and A Day To Remember vocalist Jeremy McKinnon who produced their 2015 debut Blueprints together and returned to produce the sophomore full-length Deadweight, which the band started writing immediately after they finished their debut. "I'm very proud of Blueprints but a lot of those songs were written seven years ago so who we are as people and musicians these days is drastically different," Quistad explains -- and a listen to Deadweight confirms that statement. "I think a big strength of this new record is the continuity of sitting in a room together and playing instead of trying to send files back and forth," he continues. "We were truly grinding out songs and I think this album still sounds like Wage War but at the same it has some of our most melodic moments as well as some of the heaviest." The latter is evidenced on songs like "Stitch" which is certain to incite frenzied mosh pits for years to come and displays an aggression that the band have only hinted at in the past. "We really tried to not overthink things on this record and just do whatever worked for the song, even if it was something that people might not necessarily expect," Quistad says. For this reason the band decided it made sense to enlist the aforementioned producers who truly understood Wage War on a deep level. "There were so many early mornings and late nights making this record and it was such a pleasure to work with Andrew and Jeremy again because you could tell that they really cared about it and would go to any ends to make it the best that it could be." From the explosive production to the alternately screamed and sung vocals of "Don't Let Me Fade Away," all seven of the people involved in the making of TBA worked as one unit in working toward the same collective goal. Lyrically, Deadweight sees the band exploring both personal to political issues in a way that's as raw and honest as the music that supports them. "This record is very much a snapshot of the past year; we are all very positive people but in 2016 we went through so much from seeing the world for the first time to scraping the bottom at some point emotionally or with relationships," Quistad admits. From 3 a.m. run-ins with refugees in Europe to flying home only to be confronted with the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, there was no shortage of content to draw from this time around. "We didn't hold anything back when it came to this record, so hopefully it's as therapeutic for listeners as it was for us." In a heavy music scene that's increasingly formulaic, Wage War pride themselves on the fact that they listen to a diverse range of music. "I'm a big fan of country music which surprises a lot of people and other guitarist Seth is really into pop music," Quistad explains. "We have an appreciation for all kinds of stuff and I think that all of it bleeds into the album in some way even if it's not always blatant." Take the song "Johnny Cash" which recalls the country tradition of paying homage to a pioneer of a genre while still retaining the heaviness of the act. "We get called metalcore a lot but we've never pledged allegiance to any genre because we always want to do something beyond that in the sense that we just listen to what we love and try to incorporate that into Wage War." More than anything though, the band can't wait to get back on the road and start playing the songs from Deadweight live. "We played three hometown shows at the end of last year where we would include a new song and it was so cool to see the crowd react to the new material," Quistad says – and it's obvious that palpable excitement goes both ways. "This album is the truest representation of Wage War in the sense that we wanted to put every part of us under the microscope and come up with something that we're not only proud of but also encompasses what we want to be as a band and the kind of musical statement we want to lay down," he summarizes. Underground icon, extreme metal trailblazer, third world warrior, and leader of a diverse and dedicated tribe, Max Cavalera not only survives but thrives, blasting out riff after killer riff. The same voice, body, and spirit which launched Soulfly in 1997 summons impossibly heavy noise to this day, throwing down ten slabs of monstrous music on Soulfly’s twelfth album, 2022’s Totem.
Produced by Max alongside Arthur Rizk, whom Revolver described as “the secret weapon behind Power Trip, Code Orange, and Cavalera Conspiracy,” Totem attacks without apology. It brims with the blackened-thrash and death metal bite of modern Soulfly classics like Ritual (2018) and Archangel (2015), with nods to the heavy groove of Primitive (2000) and Prophecy (2004).
“I really dig what Arthur does in the underground scene, with records by bands like Outer Heaven, Pissgrave, Black Curse,” Max explains. “Those are crazy productions, man. They’re off-the-wall and crazy-sounding. I wanted a Soulfly record with a sonic character like that, so Arthur was the perfect guy. At one point during the production, he came up to me and he was like, ‘You know Max, we’re not just doing another Soulfly record. We’re doing the best Soulfly record.’ I liked that attitude.”
Among the most prolific musicians in the genre’s history, Max led Sepultura from Brazil to the world stage, making fans out of Ozzy Osbourne, Deftones, and Dave Grohl along the way. He cofounded Nailbomb, Cavalera Conspiracy, Go Ahead And Die, and Killer Be Killed, issuing album after album to spirited acclaim from critics and fans. But no project is as singularly identified with Max as Soulfly, whose gold-selling self-titled debut arrived with unrivaled determination and spirit.
Soulfly, the moniker Max conjured, is an original portmanteau like "Lookaway” or "Straighthate.” The idea rose from one of the indigenous spiritual practices that inspire Max. "Many South American tribes believe the souls of their ancestors fly around them when they play music. They can even feel the souls of the animals sacrificed to create their instruments. It's heavy shit."
Loaded with multiple guests and instrumentation, Soulfly (1998) set a precedent for the records that would follow by managing the almost-magical feat of combining world music with metal without sacrificing the raw, authentic vibe of a band banging out songs in a basement. Twenty years on, Kerrang! included Soulfly's debut in their 10 Best Nü-Metal Albums Of All Time, alongside massively successful records by System Of A Down, Slipknot, Korn, Papa Roach, and Deftones. "I never felt Soulfly was a nü-metal band," Max points out. "We had elements of it. But by the time the sound went very commercial with Linkin Park, I didn't feel part of that. We're much heavier."
Melody Maker declared Primitive "the metal album of the year" in late 2000. When 3 followed in 2002, Spin wrote, "There's something undeniably thrilling about an Ozzfest demagogue who champions dignity as a human right and makes a maxim like 'Faith is a weapon' a rallying cry. The band remains a hard-charging, tribal-drumming monster fierce enough to kick the bulldozers out of the rainforest." Touring in support of 3 included a North American trek with Slayer.
Less than a year after its release, album four found its way into German magazine Rock Hard's 2005 book, The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time. Sputnik Music praised Prophecy as "the best Soulfly album to date," calling it their "heaviest, most experimental, and most mature." Thrash-fueled power dominated Dark Ages (2005), Conquer (2008), and Omen (2010). Critics hailed Cavalera’s never-ending supply of riffs all over again with Enslaved (2012). They celebrated the fierce vibe of Savages (2013), the first Soulfly album with Max’s son, Zyon Cavalera, on drums.
Archangel pushed the musical bludgeoning to its very limit while injecting the songs with moments of trippy nuance and dissonance. Max revisited the ritualistic and mystical ruminations on Soulfly’s Prophecy while simultaneously doubling down on the most extreme music of his career. Ritual “retained the groove of early Soulfly as well as my love for the heavy, fast stuff,” Max explains. “I think, in the end, we created a cool mix of songs that covered a lot of ground in my career.”
The songs on Totem originated with a back-to-basics songwriting approach inspired by Max’s son, Zyon. Soulfly’s drummer since 2012, Zyon asked Max one day to show him how Sepultura created their early classics. The elder Cavalera describes the process as putting riffs together like pieces in a puzzle, or bricks in a pyramid. “Zyon and I jammed for many weeks, creating the foundation.”
Max first envisioned Soulfly as a band with an evolving lineup, eager to “shake the tree” with an infusion of new creative blood from time to time. Many amazing players and guest musicians appear throughout the discography. Totem is the band’s fourth album with Zyon and second with bassist Mike Leon. It’s also the first Soulfly album without guitarist Marc Rizzo since 2004.
“Some of my favorite records are ones where everything changed, and I had to find a way to make something work,” Max says. “A lot of my best records came from struggles, like Sepultura’s Chaos A.D., the first Soulfly album, and Prophecy.” Chris Ulsh of Mammoth Grinder and Power Trip plays a guitar solo in album closer “Spirit Animal.” John Powers, Rizk’s bandmate in the group Eternal Champion, contributes several solos to the album, and Rizk plays rhythm and lead guitars as well. “Arthur ended up jamming with me a lot on the record. He’s a great guitar player,” Max says.
Like every Soulfly album before it, Totem includes a dedication to God in the liner notes. And as ever, Max follows his spiritual muse into evolving and diverse territory, taking inspiration from multiple traditions and practices. Songs like “Superstition,” “Ancestors,” and the title track lean heavily into one of the album’s themes, which deals with nature as a spiritual force.
“I wanted to make a record connected to spirit animals, forests, environmental stuff,” he says. “I’ve always been fascinated by nature. Traveling so much, I’ve gotten to see some amazing places,” he continues, citing examples like Iceland, the fjords of Norway, and the Badlands of South Dakota. “Superstition” specifically is inspired by Superstition Mountain, located in Arizona. “Far beyond all the things that you know / superstition, harder than stone,” Max says in the song.
Each Soulfly album boasts an instrumental, which Max lovingly likens to a “Planet Caravan moment,” the way Black Sabbath’s classic jam created something of a mellow album oasis. Totem is no exception. “Soulfly XII” indulges Max’s love of dark ‘80s goth guitar chords and synths. “I try to get creative with all of them; either with different instruments, like the saxophone on the Ritual instrumental, or I go by vibe. This one is really influenced by The Cure and Sisters Of Mercy.”

The Starting Line
The Starting Line (TSL) is a four-piece pop punk band from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. They formed in 1999 as Sunday Drive and are signed to Virgin Records, and were previously signed to Drive-Thru and Geffen Records. In March 2008, the band announced that they are going on break for about three years in order for Vasoli to explore Person L, Matt and Tom to explore The 76, and Mike to spend time with his two daughters.
In 1999, the band that would become The Starting Line was initiated in Churchville, Pennsylvania via an AOL instant message from guitarist Matt Watts to vocalist/bassist Kenny Vasoli. It asked if the then fourteen-year-old Vasoli, who was at that time in a band called Smash Adams, was interested in "Jamming and shit", as the message title read. Only a few weeks later, Vasoli found himself rehearsing with his future bandmates Watts, guitarist Mike Golla and drummer Tom Gryskewicz. Soon, the band started touring under the name Sunday Drive, selling out home-made merchandise and a self-recorded demo cassette titled Four Songs. Their first official release was a three-way split with The Jimmy Tuesday Band and The Commercials contributing three songs each, released on KickStart Audio in 2000.
Sunday Drive was soon approached by We the People Records and asked to produce a recording session (the infamous We the People Records Sessions). Set for a release in December 2000, the twelve songs were initially planned to become the band's debut full-length With Hopes of Starting Over on We the People Records, but they ended up serving only as demos for tracks on future releases, as the band signed with Drive-Thru Records in April 2001. On Drive-Thru, they soon released their debut EP With Hopes of Starting Over. Yet, as the name Sunday Drive was already taken by a Christian rock band, they went on as The Starting Line.
On July 16, 2002, almost exactly one year after the release of their EP, the full-length Say It Like You Mean It followed. The songs ranged from energetic and fast-paced to melancholy and calm, dealing with performing on stage ("Given the Chance"), feeling homesick ("Left Coast Envy") and getting even with Vasoli's ex-girlfriend Karina ("Up & Go", "Hello Houston", among others). The hit single "The Best of Me" and its two music videos, as well as the second single "Leaving", received heavy radio and TV airplay, securing The Starting Line a spot on the Warped Tour.
Due to their desire to put out new material, the band decided to release an all-unplugged EP, recorded in three sessions over the following year. The first three songs (recorded in The Prize Fight's Bob Jones' bedroom in August 2002), the second session (recorded in Vasoli's basement in March 2003) and the last track (recorded on the band's touring bus in April 2003) became The Make Yourself at Home EP, released on November 25, 2003. The CD and the DVD version issued simultaneously, featuring an acoustic set performed live at Skate & Surf 2003 in Asbury Park, New Jersey, would be their last releases put out solely on Drive-Thru Records, as The Starting Line was signed by Geffen Records soon afterwards.
Their major label debut, Based on a True Story, came out in May 2005. Lyrically, the band dissociated themselves from the post-relationship formula that was predominant on their previous records. On this album, a lot of the songs (e.g. "Inspired By the $", "Autography" and "The B-List") were explicitly inspired by the band's disdain for their record label Geffen and its executives. The album was far more successful than the band's 2002 effort and sold 42,000 copies within its first week, as opposed to its predecessor's 11,000. The release was followed by the semi-headlining Nintendo Fusion Tour with Fall Out Boy, kicking off in September 2005. A few dates into the tour, The Starting Line were — at their request — released from their record deal with Geffen, and became free agents. In early January 2006, their signing with Virgin Records was announced. -

Slaughter To Prevail
Kostolom is the epic second LP from the duo Alex Terrible and Jack Simmons’ band Slaughter to Prevail. The album expands on the dynamic extremes of their 2017 debut, Misery Sermon — pairing Alex’s dark, cathartic lyrics with Simmons’ pummeling riffs and tense, cinematic solos. “We wanted to make each song for us stand out in a different way,” the guitarist says. “On some of the songs, we focused on wanting to keep it uptempo, building to a breakdown as the focal point. Other songs it was about groove or the chorus — ‘how can we make this melodic?’ The albums we love the most have those dynamics, and we want to use them to make each part hit harder.”
The songs evolved over several years, the first demos constructed shortly before the release of Misery Sermon. And they finally finished the material in late 2020, with everyone (Alex, Simmons, bassist Mikhail Petrov, guitarist Dmitry Mamedov) having tracked their respective parts at home. (Evgeny Novikov recorded his drums at a nearby studio in Moscow.)
Tracks like “Made in Russia” and “Head on a Plate” pile-drive their detuned riffs straight into your skull, offering a platform for Alex at his most menacing. But the frontman also stretches out across the record, adding clean choruses to anthems like “Baba Yaga” and “Your Only.”
Alex’s words — largely sung in Russian, with occasional bursts of English — are also more balanced than the bleak song titles may suggest. “The lyrics,” Simmons says, “are quite personal to anyone who listens, I think — of personal struggle, keeping a positive mental attitude and going through the shit to have a better life and achieve your goals.”
As always, Slaughter to Prevail aim to provoke you, even as they empower you. “We want something that causes an emotion — whether it’s good or bad, disappointment or excitement or whatever,” Simmons says. “We don’t want something that’s stereotypical.” -

Ice-TTracy Marrow (born February 16, 1958 in Newark, New Jersey), better known as Ice-T, is an American rapper, singer, and actor. He is one of the pioneers of gangsta rap and was also instrumental in creating rapcore.
Ice-T started out with other West Coast rap pioneers such as Kid Frost, DJ Flash, and The Egyptian Lover with Electro recordings. Later on, he changed his style and was the first West Coast rapper to be accepted by the East Coast. "6 'n The Mornin" is sometimes seen as the track that triggered the whole gangster rap movement. It was produced by The Unknown DJ, who produced electro funk tracks before and went on to produce Compton's Most Wanted. The song was inspired by Schoolly D's "P.S.K. What Does It Mean?" and became itself the inspiration for Eazy-E and N.W.A's "Boyz N The Hood." Eyes Set To Kill
Eyes Set to Kill have taken the hardcore community by storm with an intense live show and a crushing EP. They unleash a whirlwind of melodic guitar riffs that violently flood into the ears of listeners, emotionally capturing screams, and hypnotizing melodic vocal hooks that seethe with emotion.
Originally conceived by as the two piece of consisting of Alexia Rodriguez (Lead Guitar, Vocals), and Anissa Rodriguez (Bass Guitar), this Phoenix, AZ screamo outfit attempted to create a unique sound that would combine the soft, melodic feel of female vocals and gut-wrenching screaming, backed up by powerful instrumentals with a post-hardcore influence.
“Having a screamer and a melodic singer has just always been our vision. We wanted to try something different because we didn’t want to be the typical screamo band,” said former singer Lindsey Vogt. “We didn’t try to make our songs a certain sound. We play what we feel.”
Searching the local area for talented and dedicated musicians to create this sound the group was frequently ignored and turned down by sexist musicians, despite their obvious talent and potential. The girls were classified, stereotyped, and rejected by the ignorant music scene before their demo was given a mere listen.
“People just assumed we were going to be just another chick band that has no musical talent," Vogt said. "Since we were girls, no one took us seriously and assumed that we couldn’t play and write good songs.”
After struggling to be heard for what seemed an eternity, the girls found their missing pieces in early 2006 with the addition of Greg Kerwin, (Guitar), Brandon Anderson (Vocals), and Caleb Clifton(Drums) to an already blistering line-up. From there the band would shared stages with the likes of Chiodos, Blessthefall, Goodbye Tomorrow, My American Heart, and Greeley Estates and even did a stint on the Warped Tour.
"We booked our first tour this summer completely through MySpace," says Screamer Brandon Anderson about the young band embracing a ‘do it yourself’ work ethic. "The band operates our own MySpace; reply to all comments, messages, and friend requests and does a lot promoting. Our manager made our DVD, music videos and live videos. We do everything on our own and don’t wait around for anyone."

Since this Savannah, Georgia quintet first formed in early 2001, worrying about genre limitations has never been a priority. Taking musical chances, however, always has been. While KYLESA are as heavy as any band out there, they are beholden to no one scene and no preconceived notions of what heavy music should be.
"Lots of people like to stick to one kind of music," guitarist/vocalist Philip Cope elaborates, "and even with the underground, lots of people segregate themselves into small little categories and place lots of imaginary rules on these scenes."
“We just like playing heavy music and we've always liked playing it regardless of what is popular or trendy,” guitarist/vocalist Laura Pleasants adds. “It’s most rewarding for us to try and push our own boundaries of what we can to do with our music and hopefully, in the end, offer something that is at least original.”
Kylesa's third full-length, Time Will Fuse Its Worth, is the eagerly-awaited follow-up to 2005’s To Walk A Middle Course, which topped many year end lists and landed the band in metal and mainstream press alike. After grabbing ink in Spin, the New York Times, and metal mainstays Revolver alike, Time Will Fuse Its Worth again showcases the band as the ultimate definition of do-it-yourself dedication. With Cope lending his ears and hands for production duties at The Jam Room, and featuring comprehensive artistic layout and packaging from Pleasants, the KYLESA of current day continues to put the band’s future in their own hands by relentlessly touring Europe and North America alike.
Time Will Fuse Its Worth sees the band continuing to evolve upon KYLESA’s signature sound, seamlessly flowing from track to track encompassing listeners with sounds far and wide and an utter disregard for musical boundaries. Bringing together avant-garde experimentalism with the pure fury of dirty, sludgy riffs and raw, coexisting male and female vocals, KYLESA’s ambient noise interludes, grimy rock riffs and impassioned, gruff vocals portray the doom-inspired punishment they are capable of dishing out through the power of the band’s music.
Now adding to KYLESA’s signature sound and trademark triple vocal attack is the recent addition of drumming duo Jeff Porter and Carl McGinley. “When we first started the band, we had planned on having two drummers but it didn't work out, so now it feels like everything is coming together,” Pleasants says. “There is definitely a new level of intensity to Kylesa now. Since the new lineup has gotten together we have felt the strongest creative spark yet.”
The band's reluctance to attach itself to one sound or scene and to not play by conventional rules, along with that strong creative spark, has ultimately made KYLESA that much more versatile. With a constantly heavy touring schedule has found the band crossing boundaries, sharing bills with bands as diverse as High On Fire, Circle Takes the Square, Coliseum, Torche, and Darkest Hour, as well as playing to enthusiastic crowds throughout Europe. "While we are no kings of one scene," says Cope, "we have, in a sense, just developed our own thing.”

The Cro-Mags were a band from New York City formed in 1982. The band, which had a strong cult following, released many records, their first two considered the most influential. They were among the first bands to fuse hardcore punk with thrash metal and were associated with the birth of a tougher attitude within the hardcore scene in the late 1980s. They were also one of the first hardcore punk bands associated with the Hare Krishna movement.
They first released a demo with songs that would eventually find themselves on their debut album The Age Of Quarrel (1986). The bass player Harley Flanagan and singer John Joseph were not the best of friends and eventually Joseph would part ways with the band leaving Harley to sing on the following Cro-Mags release. After The Age of Quarrel, the band released the record Best Wishes (1989). The record had a more heavy metal-influenced sound which alienated many of their fans. The band released another record Alpha Omega (1992), that saw the return of Joseph, and the departure of guitarist and songwriter Parris Mitchell Mayhew, a record that was only embraced by the most devoted of their fanbase, and followed by Near Death Experience (1993). After suffering from many lineup changes and frequent breakups, the group finally disbanded, seemingly for the last time, after this record. However, in 2000 they released a record that would almost make up for their past two releases. With Revenge the Cro-Mags came back to their early hardcore roots with songs that were comparable to their first release plus some songs with a more melodic/punk rock feel. After the release of Revenge the band broke up once again, and the internal hostility amongst band members (mainly between Mayhew and Flanagan) has never been resolved. -

Anyone who’s seen Drain live has felt it. The electricity coming off of the stage. The communal energy of the fans singing upfront. The primal thrills of fists flying in the moshpit. The uninhibited joy emanating from every banging head, screaming lung, and airborne foot in that room. There’s nothing like a Drain show. There’s no other hardcore band like Drain. The Santa Cruz band is an institution in their genre and an affable neighbor to their adjacent ones. Punks love Drain. Metalheads love Drain. Haters can’t help but love Drain. Drain is for everyone. Well, venue security guards might not love Drain. But to everyone else: Drain…Is Your Friend.
Drain -- frontman Sammy Ciaramitaro, guitarist Cody Chavez, and drummer Tim Flegal -- formed back in 2014 and cut their teeth in Santa Cruz’s fertile DIY hardcore scene. COVID lockdown couldn’t stop their 2020 debut, California Cursed, from making waves, and their 2023 follow-up, Living Proof, hit the hardcore scene like a Cali beach during hurricane season -- a torrential classic. Since then, Drain have blazed through hundreds of shows worldwide: headlining festivals, taking their friends and heroes on tour, and even playing arenas with Blink-182. Regardless of whether they're opening for pop-punk jukeboxes like Neck Deep or grabbing the stage-dive torch from Terror, Drain’s only goal is to make the crowd go buckwild.
“We call the shots for these 30 minutes,” Ciaramitaro beams excitedly while describing Drain’s nightly ritual. “I’m the boss and I’m gonna turn this place into a warzone. We’re ripping shit up, we’re breaking shit, but it’s coming from a good place in our hearts. People are feeling alive and we’re sharing this energy back and forth.”
With their third full-length album and second for Epitaph Records, …Is Your Friend, Drain had two primary goals in mind: to capture their quintessential live essence on recording, and to write new songs that’ll make their next shows even crazier. Their previous albums were written before Drain were on the road all year, and they spent the last few hundred nights onstage making note of which songs their fans respond best to. …Is Your Friend is designed to maximize their audience’s shit-losing abilities. Its 10-song tracklist includes the heaviest mosh parts, the catchiest choruses, the tastiest thrash riffs, and the most scream-able lyrics Drain have ever written. Producer Jon Markson (The Story So Far, Drug Church, One Step Closer) tracked the whole album live -- 100% real-time drums, no metronome, no programmed bullshit. It sounds the way Drain were always meant to: crisp, serrated, animated.
“There are a few moments that we call the Drain push and pull,” says Ciaramitaro, who played bass on this record for the first time in Drain’s history. “I’m pretty sure every one of these songs gets a little faster before the chorus. Just because we’re feeling it, it’s fucking happening right now. It feels alive.”
Drain are a group of best friends playing at the top of their game, and …Is Your Friend flexes their instinctive chemistry. Therefore, it made sense for Ciaramitaro to take a similar approach while writing the album’s lyrics. Instead of intently scribbling his words into a notepad like on previous Drain records, the frontman put the pen down and freestyled many of the album’s subjects off the dome. The words flowed easily because so much has happened to Ciaramitaro since California Cursed, both within the band and on a personal level. Ciaramatiro got married. Drain became a full-time touring machine. So many of their wildest dreams became everyday occurrences. However, every coin has its flipside, and Drain’s success hasn’t come without its disadvantages. The trio are spending less time at home with family, losing touch with longtime friends, and occasionally feeling weird energy from people who treat them like they’ve changed just because their band has grown.
…Is Your Friend takes stock of both the good and the bad. In the bouncy banger “Nights Like These,” Ciaramatiro pauses to cherish the lifelong goals that have become Drain’s average Tuesday: leveling a 1,000-capacity room, hopping in the van with their dearest pals, and motoring off to the next city while commencing their version of a rowdy night on tour. “Basically, it’s like a seventh grade sleepover, but we’re 30-year-old men,” Ciaramitaro quips. In the thrashy “Nothing But Love,” Ciaramitaro gives Drain’s fairweather friends the middle finger while simultaneously taking the high road: “There’s room for all of us to win/just worry about yourself and stop watching my fucking pockets,” he barks.
”I want to be a good person,” Ciaramitaro says. “But sometimes I’m like, ‘you know what? Fuck these guys!’”
There couldn’t be a better visual representation of that thematic dichotomy than …Is Your Friend’s cover art. The visual depicts the band’s iconic kewpie mascot lounging back on a beach chair, grinning into the sunlight while an angel and a devil hover above each shoulder, taunting Drain’s cartoon protagonist with two opposing paths. “That little kewpie character is exactly where I personally want to be,” Ciaramitaro says. “There’s good, there’s bad, and then there's me in the middle just tuning out all the bullshit, listening to music and trying to vibe exactly where I am. Also, the art is just sick, dude. Devils, angels -- kind of badass.”
The cover art also illustrates where Drain see themselves on a macro level. Not on either side of the punk/metal spectrum; not entirely posi-core nor one-dimensionally brooding; not just for scene newbies and not just for grizzled pit veterans. But right at the center of it all. For anyone who’s ever felt it, for everyone who wants to.
“My favorite thing right now is for someone to say, ‘I’ve never heard of you but I’m excited to see you play,’” Ciaramitro says. “This band is for everybody. We’re not different from you, we’re not going to treat anybody different than us. I’m gonna give the same respect to the kid at his first show as I will to the dude from the really cool band in that city. No one’s too cool at the Drain show.”
The title puts a bow on it. …Is Your Friend is a slogan that Drain have been printing on merch since they were playing to 15 people on a floor. Over the years, Drain have gotten bigger, their crowds have gotten more diverse, and their music has become more eclectic. But Ciaramitaro underscores what this album makes abundantly clear: their founding ethos remains unchanged. “Drain is your friend, Drain was your friend, Drain will forever be your friend.”
