Hiatus KaiyoteMelbourne-based, worldwide-beloved, genre-fluid Hiatus Kaiyote returns in 2024 with their new album Love Heart Cheat Code. Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield (guitar, vocals), Paul Bender (bass), Simon Mavin (keyboards), and Perrin Moss (drums) debuted in 2012 with LP Tawk Tomahawk, making fans of Erykah Badu, Questlove, and Prince, and embraced by tastemakers like Gilles Peterson and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Their first R&B Grammy nomination, for “Nakamarra,” was followed by another for “Breathing Underwater,” from their second LP, 2015’s Choose Your Weapon and a third for their 2021 album Mood Valiant for Best Progressive R&B Album. They’ve been sampled on songs by The Carters (Beyonce & Jay-Z), Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Chance The Rapper, and Drake, with whom Nai Palm collaborated on his Scorpion album. For a band that made a name for itself with its complexity and received critical praise and garnered fans from around the globe for their embrace of maximalism, one of the most striking things about their upcoming album Love Heart Cheat Code is its simplicity. “I complicate fucking everything,” Nai laughs. “But the more you go through things in life, you become more relaxed and uninhibited. Sometimes you can still have depth and reach people and really stop dancing around the fact: What do you want to communicate to people? And I feel like this album is a result of that clarity for us.” -
Caiti BakerCaiti Baker is singer, songwriter and front woman who was born into a household filled with vinyl, CDs and tapes of blues, soul, gospel, jazz, big band and rock & roll. Caiti’s father, a blues musician himself, made sure that she was raised amongst music – it was everywhere.
As a child, Caiti developed a love and appreciation for the pioneering music but was drawn obsessively to Hip Hop, R&B, New Jack Swing and Neo soul. After being given an 8 track digital recorder, she learnt how to write and record songs on her own from the age of 12. Inspired by the greats like Aretha Franklin, Big Mamma Thornton and Little Walter; Caiti began to take notes on Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill and Faith Evans among others.
After writing, recording and touring nationally and internationally with electro soul duo Sietta, Caiti stepped out on her own and released her debut album Zinc (Produced by James Mangohig and Michael Hohene) in October 2017 through Perambulator Records. Garnering 4 star reviews from Rolling Stone and themusic.com, highly regarded music journalist Tony Hilliar said “Caiti Baker is a genuine one-off, whose startling musicality and originality embraces like a breath if fresh air.”
Caiti has performed live supporting Son Little (US), Booker T (US), Guy Sebastian, Dan Sultan among others and is heavily affiliated with Briggs’ Bad Apples label. Caiti features on A.B. Original’s ARIA award winning debut album Reclaim Australia and is a regular guest performer with the duo. In 2017, Caiti’s song ‘Make Your Own Mistakes’ won The NT Song of The Year; in the National Live Music Awards she won Best Live Performer in the NT and she is the AU Awards’ R&B Soul Artist of 2017.
Caiti writes songs about what she knows and feels, sings with her soul and unashamedly performs the hell out of them. But that will all be obvious when you hear her music and watch her perform, which will have you either dancing or chilling with a grin on your face. -
