Wombats
The Wombats return with their most sophisticated and sonically adventurous album yet. Oh! The Ocean (out February 21st 2025) grooves with social anxiety, internal strife and the tribulations of LA life, where Murph lives. Once again they provide escapism from the mundane with songwriting that has profound meaning to audiences in turbulent times, packaged in the band’s deceptively cuddly and playful façade.
Oh! The Ocean marks a new era for the band, moving away from previous synthetic sounds to embrace a warmer-blooded approach. Taking 50 new songs into a studio in Echo Park, LA, in July 2024 for six weeks of sessions with new producer John Congleton (St Vincent, Wallows, Death Cab for Cutie), The Wombats shunned the AI studio techniques that have become prevalent in modern-day recording, in order to make a far more natural and human album.
Alongside familiar sounds they explore new genres from glistening tech rock to sci-fi pop, futuristic fuzz rock to bluesy rock’n’roll, with touches of disco and hip-hop-inflections.

Vanessa Carlton"Always building up, falling apart. Love is an art," sings Vanessa Carlton on the title track of her sixth album, Love Is An Art. Like the record itself, the song is a meditation on the eternal seesaw that is human connection: the push, the pull, the balance, the bottoming out. It's that constantly evolving nature of love, expectations and compassion that Carlton analyzes from all angles on Love Is An Art, from romantic, to parental, to the friends that hold us up and the leaders that repeatedly let us down. And on tracks like the album's opener, "I Can't Stay the Same," that also includes the relationship with the person staring back at us in the mirror, each and every morning.
"Love is the energy you put out into the world," says the Nashville-based Carlton, who was inspired in part by the 1956 book The Art of Loving by philosopher Erich Fromm, and by stories and struggles both in her interior world and the world around her. "And it can be so incredibly messy at times."
Produced by Dave Fridmann (MGMT, Flaming Lips), Love Is An Art finds Carlton reckoning with toxic relationships (the confessional "Miner's Canary"), eternal partnership ("Companion Star") and the children who fill the world with love and grace while politicians fill their pockets (the passionate "Die, Dinosaur," written after the shootings in Parkland, Florida). And true to Carlton’s skill as both a lyricist and an instrumentalist, the arrangements on Love Is An Art tell these tales as vibrantly as the words themselves: piano parts that speak of rage and tenderness, synths that burst and glow like dawn.
Love Is An Art doesn't just explore connections – it was also born of one. Carlton wrote the album with the acclaimed Nashville-based singer-songwriter Tristen, camped out and working while her daughter napped. "This record is about being out of my comfort zone," says Carlton. "What's going to happen when we do things that people assume are not naturally a match, like working with Dave Fridmann? I loved the idea of working with someone who’s known for a palette that isn’t associated with me, but it was a fit the second we started working together. Or what could happen when I sit with another writer, and just collaborate?"
The result is an extremely dynamic LP filled with sticky melodies and haunting phrases as well as experimental constructions: super high highs, super low lows, and song structures that break the mold from the expected. Unlike her previous, critically-acclaimed 2015 album Liberman, which Carlton describes as having a calming, almost meditative palette, Love Is An Art reads, and sounds, "red." Huge. Passionate. The color of a beating heart.
"I want to run, but I won’t get very far," Carlton sings on "The Only Way to Love," the album's first official single. "Cause I can’t fight the force of my young beating heart. Like a soldier's steady march, answering the call. It’s the only way to love." It's a song about loving with everything you've got – that love itself is precious and rare enough to commit to, above all. "When you believe in a relationship, in a connection, you are actually believing in yourself," she adds.
Carlton has constantly challenged that belief, in both herself and the expectations that surround her throughout her lengthy, accomplished career: she attended both the School of American Ballet and Columbia University, and was discovered as a singer-songwriter/pianist when a cassette tape demo was given to legendary music impresario Ahmet Ertegun. With her debut single "A Thousand Miles," Carlton soared to the top of the Billboard charts and garnered multiple Grammy nominations, though that song is only a small fraction of the body of work and artistic identity she's developed since then, ever evolving and growing as a performer and songwriter. In the summer of 2019, she pushed that even further, making her Broadway debut as Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
There's a striking image on the cover of Love Is An Art: it's a delicate hand grabbing a tiger by the tail, but it's not meant to conjure the familiar colloquialism. Instead, it captures something different. It’s a about going after something bigger than you, more powerful than you, something that you’ll never be able to really control: but you grab it anyway. Something like love. That's the spirit of Love Is An Art – connections aren’t easy to make, and sometimes we fail. But it's always worth trying. As Carlton sings on "Die, Dinosaur," the hope comes when there's nothing left to lose.

Friendly FiresFriendly Fires comprises singer Ed MacFarlane, drummer Jack Savidge, and guitarist Edd Gibson.
Formed out of the ashes of 'First Day Back', the St Albans hardcore band they formed while still at school, Friendly Fires make razor-sharp post-punk that burns through the memories of all the dismal, skinny jeaned ‘80s revivalists you’ve been hearing these past few years. Sounding brittle, knotty and urgent, Friendly Fires are the real deal. With no fat or padding on them at all, their songs possess an elegant sparseness. As guitarist Edd Gibson notes: “The hardest thing I think is to know what to leave out, to know when something is enough.” But amongst all the strpped-back twists, there are also moments full of deep, blessed-out melodies. “I love lush, massive, tingly chords; the My Bloody Valentine sound,” says bassist and singer Ed MacFarlane.

Circa Waves
Circa Waves was formed in Liverpool in 2013 by guitarist and singer Kieran Shudall, who'd decided to "knuckle down" and commit fully after spending years in no-hope garage bands. After writing a batch of songs he recruited guitarist Joe Falconer, bassist Sam Rourke, and drummer Sian Plummer (replaced by Colin Jones in 2015), and the band toured the UK & EU.
The reception they received for their debut instilled them with a sense of confidence and vigor which created a heavier, beefier sophomore record, 2017's Different Creatures.
The band's third full-length, What's It Like Over There? arrived in 2019, a top ten album, embraced a more nuanced pop sophistication. In early 2020, they delivered Sad Happy. It was the group's highest-charting effort to date at number 4.
Returning in 2023 with their fifth album, Never Going Under. Informed by Shudall's experience becoming a father, worries over climate change and the state of the world. It features the singles Hell On Earth, Do You Wanna Talk & Carry You Home and reached number 1 in the independent chart. Written in the pandemic and produced by Shuddall, it is their most comprehensive album to date, both thematically and musically.

The Royston Club
When The Royston Club released their debut album Shaking Hips And Crashing Cars
in the summer of 2023, the Wrexham band went full throttle, appropriately, as they
raced across the finish line to score their first UK top 20 album. Sold out shows across
the country soon followed, while their formidable live reputation allowed the group –
frontman Tom Faithfull, guitarist Ben Matthias, bass player Dave Tute and drummer
Sam Jones – to become one of the country’s most exciting new acts.
But a great debut album, as many artists have discovered, will only get you so far. It’s
what you do next that really counts.
For The Royston Club, the answer to that conundrum comes in the form of their superb
second album Songs For The Spine, which is the sound of a band taking their chance
to hit the next level, grabbing it with both hands and refusing to let go.
It’s a cohesive and fully formed record that builds on the sonic DNA of their debut, but
the steady hand of producer Rich Turvey effortlessly takes it to the next level. It’s
bigger, more experimental and more heartfelt too. The band say that the title reflects
the individual vignettes of places and people close to their hearts contained with each
song. They are powerful stories in their own right, but they combine on this album to
create an almighty and often beautiful backbone.
There is huge growth to be found too, which reflects just how much The Royston Club
have evolved since album one. Songs like the catchy ‘30/20’ skip along with a classic
Roystons groove that will be welcomed like an old friend by OG devotees, but ‘Shivers’
– the latest song to arrive from the album – feels positively gargantuan. It creeps along
with a slow and steady bassline, before exploding into something that feels destined to
ignite mosh pits across the land when the band hits the road again. Similarly, the slow-
burning epicness of late album highlight ‘Spinning’ – which offers a lyrical show of
solidarity for people going through tough times – feels like something from The Bends-
era Radiohead.

SLAGs singer could be a man if you closed your eyes and listened closely, but she isn’t. SLAG have released two songs and everyone seems to really like them. SLAG released a workout video on YouTube. SLAGs live shows are awesome – lots of people have said so. SLAG have plans.
