ENGLISH
Hannes Arason Quartet plays original music composed by its members — progressive contemporary jazz in a freer vein. The quartet uses a chordless instrumentation to open up possibilities in all directions, with emphasis on interplay and the joy of playing. At Djúpið on July 9 (upcoming) the quartet will perform brand-new material alongside older pieces, including music from Hannes’s first album, Frífólk, released in 2024. That album drew inspiration from Swedish and Icelandic folk music, while the quartet pulls influences from many directions — for example Cecil Taylor, Schoenberg, Albert Ayler, and Ligeti.
Hannes Arason — trumpet, flugelhorn
Björgvin Ragnar Hjálmarsson — tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone
Birgir Steinn Theodórsson — double bass
Sólrún Mjöll Kjartansdóttir — drums
