The National Museum of Iceland offers an exciting programme of events every Sunday throughout the winter and spring months. On the first Sunday of each month, there is a programme for children and families. On other Sundays, museum specialists offer guided tours of the museum’s exhibitions, while on the last Sunday of each month, the specialist-led tour is conducted in a foreign language.

The museum’s objects hold many stories. Elves, knights and dragons feature in some of them, but it is also fascinating to imagine what life was like for the people who used these objects long before they came to the museum.

💀 The skeletons on display provide unique insights into life and death in Iceland during the Viking Age.

⛵ The rowing boat and the baðstofa (traditional living and sleeping room) are always popular, and nearby you can see toys that children played with in the old days.

To round off the visit, why not try your hand at tossing a fortune-telling bone, spinning a top, or playing traditional games with bones and jawbones in the family and children’s area on the first floor? You can also colour pictures of dogs and cats or simply lose yourself in free play.
