Each bibliotherapy session has its own theme related to human experience and the challenges of everyday life, such as identity, friendship, change, stress, joy, and hope. Participants will have the opportunity to explore these themes through shared reading, reflection, writing, and conversation.
The sessions form a coherent programme, while each session also stands on its own. Participants are therefore welcome to attend one or several bibliotherapy sessions according to their interests and needs, without any requirement for previous participation or preparation.
The emphasis will be on creating a warm and welcoming environment where people can engage with literature on their own terms, share reflections, and encounter different perspectives. Participation in personal discussions will always be voluntary.
The projet aims to provide an accessible space for literature, dialogue, and wellbeing, while strengthening the library's role as a vibrant community hub.
The bibliotherapy sessions are in relations to workshops and a lecture delivered at Reykjavík City Library in October 2026 by bibliotherapy specialist Bijal Shah.
The bibliotherapy sessions will be led by Esther Ágústsdóttir, literary scholar and teacher, and Elín Bergsdóttir, educational and career counsellor, sociologist, and poet both from the Icelandic School of Literature (Bókmenntaskólinn). Both have attended courses and lectures led by Bijal Shah.
The project is a collaboration between Bókmenntaskólinn and Reykjavík City Library, and is supported by the Icelandic Library Fund (Bókasafnasjóður).
