Rebecca Cockram and Ben Easton transpose the classic shoegaze sound into the present day with surreal elegance – and have received nothing but rave reviews since their debut EP “deary” (2023). Without detracting from the genre’s greats such as My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive, the London duo opens a new chapter in the genre, blending hypnotic drum loops with ethereal waves, trip hop with dream pop, and fragile vocals with fresh arrangements. Like in a light-flooded cathedral at the end of the world, the songs whisper through the ear – sometimes as walls of sound, sometimes as delicate compositions – and crystallise into memories that may not even be one’s own. It is clear that they thereby appeal to all those who were able to experience shoegazing at its peak with heads bowed. But even newcomers to the genre will find in deary a gateway to sonic worlds that can be explored here from a bird’s-eye view. Their debut album “Birding” (2026), freshly released via Bella Union, comes just at the right time for their premiere here in Hamburg.
