Turn an everyday plastic bag into something useful!
Join us for a hands-on workshop where we’ll transform discarded plastic shopping bags into colorful, one-of-a-kind zipped pouches.
We’ll experiment with layering and fusing plastic bags using a household iron, creating a new, flexible material. You can add your own designs using pieces of colored plastic, letters, patterns, or fragments of familiar logos. Once our new material is made, we’ll turn it into a small pouch. Perfect for pencils, makeup, cables, or anything else that needs a home.
Along the way, we’ll explore how an everyday disposable object can be transformed into a new material for creative expression.

The workshop is suitable for teenagers and adults. No previous sewing or crafting experience is necessary, and all materials are provided.

The workshop is led by Christalena Hughmanick & Diana Burkot.
Christalena Hughmanick is an American textile artist based in Reykjavík, working in quilting and participatory art. She came to Iceland as an artist in residence in 2020 and runs Saumum Saman Ísland (Let's Sew Iceland Together) collective quilt-making project. In 2019 she led the Freedom Quilt Project in Hungary, and has been supported by Fulbright Hungary and the U.S. Embassy in Budapest. www.christalenahughmanick.com
Diana Burkot is a Reykjavík-based interdisciplinary artist and musician whose practice explores political and social themes, with two M.A. degrees in art and work presented internationally across Europe, the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand. Her recognitions include the Woody Guthrie Center Award and an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Kent; she is also an activist and a member of the activist art collective Pussy Riot since 2011.
