Evening mass with old liturgy from the time of Hallgrímur Pétursson at Hallgrímskirkja.
In 2014, on the 400th anniversary of the birth of reverant and poet Hallgrímur Pétursson, the idea arose of creating a Mass using the Mass Ordinary from Guðbrandur’s Graduale, with a central verse drawn from Hallgrímur Pétursson’s Andleg keðja (Spiritual Chain).
Andleg keðja is a collection of verses based on the texts of the First Lectionary Series of the church year, with one verse for each holy day of the year.
The idea became a reality, and the Hallgrímur Mass was first sung on the first Sunday of October 2014 at Breiðholtskirkja.
The Mass is entirely sung, with no instruments.
The Breiðholt Church Choir performed the Mass under the direction of Örn Magnússon. Since Örn has now left his position at Breiðholtskirkja and the choir is no longer affiliated with the church, it has taken the name Kammerkórinn AMICI — a name that says much about the spirit of friendship that characterises this group.
The Hallgrímur Mass has been sung at Breiðholtskirkja every year since 2014, and in recent years the choir has also been invited to perform the Mass at Hallgrímskirkja.
This year, the medieval vocal ensemble Cantores Islandiae is joining the performance. The ensemble is now based at Hallgrímskirkja.
Before the mass @19:00 there will be an introduction of the service in Icelandic with Örn Magnússon.
