A programme of four works by outstanding Icelandic composers, all featured on my album XV, alongside four movements from a monumental 17th-century German organ work by Steigleder.

The Icelandic works include Þorvaldur Örn Davíðsson’s Einstigi, inspired by the mountain Herðubreið; Bára Grímsdóttir’s Sálmurinn um Maríu Mey; Sigurður Sævarsson’s organ arrangement of O crux; and Atli Ingólfsson’s four-part fugue based on the theme from Gunnar Þórðarson’s beloved Icelandic song Þú og ég.

Steigleder’s extraordinary set of 40 variations on Vater unser im Himmelreich, composed in 1626, forms the historical centrepiece of the programme.

A musical journey connecting Icelandic contemporary music with the rich traditions of the early Baroque, and with the number four as a recurring thread throughout the programme.
