Total Defence and Comprehensive Security – Is the Nordic Model Relevant to Iceland?
What can Iceland learn from Finland and Sweden when it comes to Total Defence, preparedness and societal resilience?
How does a society protect itself when threats extend beyond conventional warfare to critical infrastructure, communications, energy, information systems and supply chains?
Bifröst University is hosting the seminar Total Defence and Comprehensive Security at Nordic House on 17 September. Icelandic, Finnish and Swedish experts will discuss Nordic experience of Total Defence and comprehensive security – and what lessons Iceland can draw from it.
Speakers:
🇪🇺 Dr Veronica Anghel, political scientist at the European University Institute, will discuss Total Defence in the broader context of European security.
🇫🇮 Axel Hagelstam, Director of International Affairs and Analysis at the National Emergency Supply Agency (NESA), will discuss the Finnish system and how government, business and society work together to strengthen preparedness and security.
🇸🇪 Jan Lundin, Ambassador-designate of Sweden to Iceland, will discuss Total Defence from the perspective of Swedish foreign and security policy.
🇮🇸 Jóhann B. Skúlason, Assistant Superintendent, Civil Protection and Emergency Management, National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, will bring an Icelandic perspective to the discussion on Total Defence and preparedness.
The seminar is part of the Jean Monnet Chair project Iceland’s Strategic Role in Arctic and European Security (ISARCEUR) at Bifröst University, led by Professor Magnús Skjöld, and is organised in cooperation with the Embassies of Sweden and Finland in Iceland.
