Curator Edda Halldórsdóttir leads visitors through the exhibition Kjarval and the 20th Century: When Modernity Anchored.

The works in the exhibition span the period during which the painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval was active. Looking at Kjarval’s career in the context of the works of his contemporaries reveals how visual art changed and developed over time. The prevailing spirit of each era is reflected in different artistic styles, and the works provide insight into their creators’ concerns, surroundings, and circumstances. In the early years, a romantic view of nature predominated, but symbolism soon emerged, and the first steps were taken toward breaking away from a naturalistic visual language.
