For years, Nosen’s tracks have graced the ‘Underrated German Rap’ playlists here in Germany. In fact, they’re considered gems of sample-heavy boom bap and have been celebrated across the scene for their exceptionally well-crafted lyrics. Nosen is a lyricist in the truest sense of the word, his authenticity stemming from a style-conscious humility when it comes to his craft. Active since 2014, the Hamburg-based artist has, particularly in the 2020s with albums such as “Delirium” (2022) and “Unten Links” (2024), left no doubt as to his continuous development in terms of raps and flows, beats and cuts. Conscious hip-hop laced with socially critical sarcasm, and delicate sampling with an instrumental jazz vibe, come together here to form contemporary explorations of the tension between melancholy and optimism. Nosen draws on the roots of German rap – from Torch and Advanced Chemistry, from Too Strong and the Stieber Twins – but adds fresh blood, salty tears and hard-earned beads of sweat to the mix. The results are simply the finest introspective hip-hop, with not a shred of hype needed – and yet, for that very reason, perfectly suited to our confused, seemingly hopeless times.
