POLISH FILM FESTIVAL IN FJARÐABYGGÐ
WHEN: October 16th – 18th
WHERE: Valhöll — Strandgata 49, Eskifjörður
The sixth edition of the Polish Film Festival in Fjarðabyggð draws on the latest achievements of Polish cinema to offer a deeply introspective portrait of a society in transformative motion. By bringing contemporary means of artistic expression into dialogue with the cultural codes of the now-distant 1980s, the festival also traces the continuity of national discourse within socially engaged cinema. Against the backdrop of the global social and political transformations of the 2020s, this discourse appears more relevant than ever.
This year’s selection engages with compelling, often polarising, yet deeply relevant subjects precisely because they resonate with the everyday experiences of viewers — both those who identify with Poland and those who maintain a safe cognitive distance from the country of the Vistula and the Oder. At the same time, by heralding the internationalisation of Polishness as an acquired rather than innate identity category, this year’s selection challenges the increasingly anachronistic image of Polish society as a social monolith. It invites the subcultures of the borderlands to participate fully in the national discourse — the very communities that, through an unbroken rhythm of alternating endings and beginnings, drive social change before our eyes.
During the three-day event, twelve films will be presented, offering a diverse cross-section of Polish cinema of 2025, from documentary and socially engaged titles to family films, drama and comedic forms, alongside a classic of Polish satire from the 1980s. The programme also includes six short films, among them an animation. Polish, Ukrainian and Spanish will be heard on screen, alongside lesser-known Polish dialects of Bukovina, with all films screened with English subtitles. The programme will also feature workshops led by active film professionals. Throughout the festival, the team will be available to audiences, transforming the traditional Q&A format into an ongoing, informal conversation about the films. All screenings and accompanying events are completely free of charge.
