HOBBY HORSE PRESENTS:

Rasmus Kjær Trio & OMRUM (DK/NO)

Rasmus Kjær Trio performs music by Rasmus Kjær tonight, composed over the past decade and a half. The program includes tracks from the debut album Broken Bow (2012), recorded with Kresten Osgood and Jonas Westergaard, as well as music from the latest release, Underlake (2025), with Nicolas Masson and Noé Franklé.

The music is melodic, open, and inquisitive. It draws on the history of jazz and the piano, while pointing toward new horizons. The compositions serve as frameworks for a living interplay in which the written and the improvised continuously shape one another, and where the three musicians are given room to explore the music together.

At the piano sits Rasmus Kjær, pianist, organist, composer, and improviser. He has released a number of albums under his own name, from Broken Bow and Orgelimprovisationer to Turist, EROBOTICA, and Underlake. His music moves between jazz, improvised music, composition, and experimental music. In 2020, Turist received the Best New LP Release award at Perfect Sound Forever's Vinyl Anachronist Awards in the USA, and in 2024 he received a commission from the Danish Arts Foundation for EROBOTICA 2050.

On bass is Richard Andersson, a Danish/Faroese/Icelandic bassist and composer who has been described as one of the most interesting figures on the Danish jazz scene. Andersson has released numerous albums as a bandleader and has collaborated with musicians such as Jeff "Tain" Watts, Jerry Bergonzi, Tony Malaby, Bill McHenry, Rudi Mahall, Kresten Osgood, and Kasper Tranberg. He has been nominated for the Danish Music Awards Jazz on several occasions, including as Composer of the Year in 2023.

On drums is Anders Vestergaard, drummer, composer, and improviser with a strong international profile. He has toured the world and is, among other things, part of the groups Yes Deer, Baujillaud, Blomsten, and Laser Nun. Vestergaard has appeared on more than 40 releases and has collaborated with, among others, Evan Parker, Marcela Lucatelli, and Taku Unami. He has also released three solo albums and works as both a composer and a solo artist.

The trio thus brings together three musicians with strong, distinctive artistic profiles and a shared interest in improvisation, composition, and musical exploration.

The concert is part of Spil Dansk and is supported by Koda Kultur.

OMRUM is a collective project – a musical free space where four strong voices meet as equals. The music moves between composition and free improvisation, with an open, atmospheric quality that is occasionally disrupted by explosive bursts of virtuosity.

The quartet features Erik Kimestad (trumpet), Mads Hyhne (trombone), Richard Andersson (double bass), and Jakob Høyer (drums) – four distinctive musicians from the Scandinavian jazz scene. There is no front figure in Omrum, no hierarchy – only the freedom to contribute and express oneself without fixed boundaries.

OMRUM released their debut album Bringer of Light on Hobby Horse Records, which was nominated for the German Jazz Prize for best international debut release. In late April, the quartet travelled to the island of Aarø to record at Mads Hyhne's summer house – and the music that emerged will be released in early 2027.

For their concert at Christiania Jazz Club, Omrum will present material from both the new and the old record – a snapshot of a band in motion.

OMRUM is an open space – for the musicians and for the listeners. The only requirement is open ears and an open mind.

he concert takes place at Christiania Jazz Club on Sunday, November 1st as part of Spil Dansk week and is supported by Koda Kultur.
