Reykjavík City and the University of Iceland will host exhibitions on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki from October 6 to November 7, 2026. The exhibitions feature photographs and explanatory materials that shed light on the consequences of the atomic bombings in 1945 and promote greater understanding of the devastation caused by nuclear weapons and the importance of peace and disarmament.
Since 1995, the exhibition has been held a total of 73 times in 61 cities across 22 countries. This is the first time the exhibition has been held in Iceland, and it will take place in Tjarnarsalur at Reykjavík City Hall.
The exhibition at Tjarnarsalur will officially open on Tuesday, October 6, at 4:00 p.m.
Björg Magnúsdóttir, President of the Reykjavík City Council, will welcome guests.
Yahata Teruko will give a talk about her experience in Hiroshima. She was eight years old when the atomic bombings took place.
The President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, will then officially open the exhibition together with Kenju Shiga, Director of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki Museum.
The exhibition will include, among other things, artifacts and historical documents related to the bombings, photographs, survivors’ accounts, and virtual reality equipment.
The exhibition at Tjarnarsalur is open to everyone until November 1.
