The City and the Flowers

Is it possible to experience natural beauty within the city limits?
The City and the Flowers is a project that was carried out as part of the City of Reykjavík's creative summer jobs programme in the summer of 2026 and seeks to answer that question. The works are based on photographs taken between 25 May and 25 August of structures and flora within the City of Reykjavík.
The images are then developed using the cyanotype method, where a light-sensitive material makes the image visible with the sun's rays. Images of man-made structures and vegetation are spliced together, creating a surreal dream world where the man-made and the natural blend together. In this way, an attempt is made to investigate the natural beauty within the city limits and the interplay between humanity and nature. The city completely changes the environment in which it is built and, likewise, nature adapts to the man-made structures.
Una Erlín has recently graduated with a BA in Graphic Design from the Iceland University of the Arts. She has a great interest in nature and the outdoors and spends a lot of time in the city's green spaces.
The exhibition is open during the library's opening hours.
